The SKETCHPAD system, introduced in the 1960s, is called the origin of CAD.
Since the 1990s, CAD has evolved from 2D (two-dimensional) drafting, which had been the mainstream, to 3D (three-dimensional) production.

It was introduced into the apparel sector around 1970.

Nowadays, CAD is commonly used in the apparel field, and it has made it possible to create patterns by hand for 3D cutting and flat cutting in a short time and accurately on a personal computer.

In apparel CAD, patternmaking, grading, and marking are mainly done digitally.

The digital data eliminates the need to worry about pattern storage space, which is another major advantage.

Considering only patternmaking, there is an option to use CAD provided as free software, but users need to make their own innovations in order to perform processing specific to apparel CAD.
